Marianne Wakerlin is the founder and owner of Solmate Socks. The company is run from a solar-powered office in a small town in central Vermont where she is surrounded and inspired by the woods and hills of the countryside. Her history with knitting goes back to when she was 9 years old and her mother, Sunny, taught her how to knit. This began her life long enthusiasm for knitting: before she turned her hobby into a business, she had knitted more than a hundred pairs of socks for her family and friends over the years.
Her colourful and complex patterns are knitted at a family owned knitting mill, finished and inspected by hand before finally being mismatched with their 'solemate'.
The sock designing, yarn manufacturing, knitting, and finishing final touches are all completed in Vermont and North Carolina.
The recycled cotton yarns are created by recovering scraps from the production of cotton products, mainly t-shirts, and are certified by Made in Green and Oeko-Tex. These certifications mean that the materials are free from harmful substances and are made with respect for the environment and human rights.
The benefits of using recycled yarns is decrease of contaminated water and by-product waste, and reduction in the amount of pre-consumer cotton fabric waste dumped into landfills. Using recycled yarns also eliminates the need for planting new cotton crops.
